Matchday 2 brought us some interesting results, and our pundits fared pretty well for the most part. Some predictions were straightforward and some others were pretty tough to call! The standings have not changed yet, as Bernie has a five point gap between him and second placed Mohaned in the pundit race. The race between the contributors has been much tighter, with Osman and Daniyal locked on 15 points apiece while Nahel and Zee are not too far behind and both tied on 13 points. The overall leader is still Bernie while Osman and Daniyal are close. Perhaps we will seem some movement in the tables after this weekend!
From Matchday 2, the Sunderland v Manchester United (1-1) game was the most common perfect prediction among the pundits, with two perfect scores. Everybody picked up at least a point from Chelsea v Leicester City (2-0), but only one perfect prediction was made from this match, surprisingly. For Everton v Arsenal, while many of the participants believed the score would be a draw, only two predicted a perfect score of 2-2. The blowout of the week was Tottenham v QPR (4-0), and certainly nobody predicted that scoreline, despite points being picked up for Tottenham wins. Osman was the only predictor to get a perfect score on the Manchester City v Liverpool (3-1) match.
Matchday 3 has some big teams lining up against each other once again, with Everton v Chelsea and Tottenham v Liverpool. Manchester United are looking to get back to winning ways away against Burnley while Arsenal make the trip to Leicester. Stoke City travel to Manchester City to wrap up the top 7 fixtures. Matchday 3 Predictions:
Key Fixtures:
Bernie: Tottenham v Liverpool: The two underachieving English teams who sold their best players to the best teams in Spain face off on match day 3. Yes I’m talking about Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez. After losing both star men, these two teams invested heavily in their respective squads. Tottenham had a year head start so their team should have gelled by now. Liverpool will learn what that is all about. Pocchetino has this team playing well and after hitting a speed bump at City, the merseysiders need to get back on track. I see a stalemate here unfortunately. 1-1 Draw.
Alexander: AC Milan vs Lazio: Adriano Galliani recently said, “The transfer market? We’re entering the final hours, let’s see if we’re able to buy a great striker. This is the main aim. Torres? He is definitely a great striker, let’s see if we’re able to get him or another player.”
This is all you need to know, really. Lazio have strengthened their back line over the summer with the signings of Dutchmen Edson Braafheid and Stefan de Vrij, so they should look more solid this season than in recent years. Milan on the other hand have signed Diego Lopez – a good goalkeeper, but their other business has been uninspiring. Alex from PSG is a dodgy move, and Jeremy Menez has always flattered to deceive. I fully expect AC to struggle again this season, and this match is likely to be a passionate if low-scoring affair, with Lazio edging it. 0-1 Lazio.
Mohaned: Leicester City vs Arsenal: Newly promoted Leicester have started the season confidently despite a difficult fixture list, picking up a point from Everton and losing albeit performing well against Chelsea. Now they face an Arsenal side that have not yet clicked into gear, and will of course be missing Giroud who is out until the new year. Alexis Sanchez remains unconvincing up front and I think Arsenal will struggle to break Leicester down, but should get there in the end, nonetheless. Something to note – Leicester have just signed Esteban Cambiasso! He will compete with Arsenal assistant manager Steve Bould this weekend to be the most Voldemort-looking person in the stadium. 0-2 Arsenal.
Rishay: Everton vs Chelsea:These teams have played out some dogfights over the past couple of seasons, with Chelsea just holding the edge. Romelu Lukaku will be the player to watch for Everton, as he will be facing off with his old club. For the Blues, Diego Costa might be doubtful with injury, but they still have plenty of firepower all over the pitch. Cesc Fabregas will be the player to watch for them as he has bagged 3 assists in his first two league games for Chelsea. All in all, this should be a high energy and fast paced encounter and I suspect that Everton will have a go at Chelsea. 1-1 Draw.
